  • Baeza, Pilar

    University Professor

Pilar Baeza obtained her Ph.D. in Viticulture with her work “Tempranillo performance (Vitis vinifera L) under four Irrigation Training Systems.” The results helped establish the criteria and thresholds to decide the best training systems for commercial vineyards in warm climates.

She has also been involved in several research lines on irrigation (quantity and timing of the irrigation), whose results have been taken into account in developing the Irrigation Regulation for the DO Vinos de Madrid. Another research line has been on studying the agronomic response of varieties for their adaptation to warm climate. Lately, she has addressed the lack of sustainability in Spanish vine growing by proposing minimal pruning to increase water efficiency and sustainability in warm areas while keeping must composition unaltered. This involves changing the vineyard management paradigm, in aspects such as higher yields, higher water use, and more sophisticated technology, resulting in higher sustainability.

Currently, she is leading a study on minority cultivars in warm climates. She is also focused on precision viticulture to increase plant water status accuracy by increasing sample size and obtaining fast information with thermal and multispectral images. Results are not conclusive but are promising. She is also a vineyard consultant for private and public companies.

My research activity, in addition to being focused on the study and analysis of mitigation strategies for N losses associated with agricultural production under real field conditions, is focused on an exercise of increasing scales, both temporal and spatial. The use of process models, together with the experimental data obtained during my research activity, is allowing estimates of agro-environmental impacts, in the medium and long term, in various agricultural systems and under different management strategies.

In addition, I have sought a more integrated vision of a complex problem such as GHG emissions in the agri-food system and other nitrogenous compounds and their mitigation. Without abandoning the generation of quality empirical data at the plot scale, I have led other studies focused on the provincial, hydrographic basin, national and large region (Mediterranean) levels. I have delved into methodologies such as meta-analysis, modeling and nutrient balances. In addition, I am especially interested in the impact that changes in habits, both in production and consumption, can produce on the increase in the sustainability of agri-food systems, at different scales. As a result of this work, I have published 60 contributions in JCR journals, with a WoS h-index of 27 and 2261 citations according to Web of Science (February 2022). Accredited by ANECA as University Professor (January 2022, RD 415/2015).

Since 2009 I have participated in 20 competitive research projects at national and international level. In recent years I have been the Principal Investigator of three competitive projects with the aim of studying and proposing management strategies for agroecosystems that lead to lower agro-environmental impacts. I highlight the European project AgroGreen-SUDOE (https://agrogreensudoe.org/) of which I am IP. I have participated in 14 research contracts with companies in the sector (coordinating 8 of them). My research activity through international projects and research stays has woven a dense international research network with groups from more than 10 countries (United States, United Kingdom, France, Kenya, Costa Rica, Brazil, Chile, Ethiopia, Germany, Netherlands and China). Active member of international initiatives linked to my field of work such as “The Global Research Alliance on Agricultural Greenhouse Gases” and the global initiative “INMS: Towards the Establishment of an International Nitrogen Management System”. In the United Arab Emirates, during COP28, I led a team of researchers in a study on the carbon footprints of different water sources. This research was funded by Lanjarón, a prominent European water company that is redefining the labels of globalization and PET plastic recycling. My team researched the environmental costs of different types of water sources and published our findings. The owner of the company shared our research findings via a prominent international podcast. Also, during COP28, I helped to plan and execute a panel discussion on corporate sustainability with several highly esteemed female business leaders. One member of this panel is an environmental pioneer from the United Nations’ Global Compact and another panelist is the owner of a prominent social enterprise that fights for indigenous environmental rights. This panel discussed how companies can sustainably grow in line with national and international environmental goals. The panel occurred at COP28 and allowed for a large crowd of young leaders from across the world to learn from a group of corporate trailblazers who are shaping the next phase of commercial growth.
