PRISMA: Drought Resilience and Food Security in West Africa, Research Seminar<\/strong> led by Eva Iglesias and Enrique Estefan\u00eda<\/h2>\n\n

The PRISMA project<\/strong>,<\/a> funded by the EU and the AECID, began in 2022 and concluded in 2025. The aim of the project was to contribute to the agroecological transformation of West Africa\u2019s agro-pastoral systems to help them adapt to climate change, with a view to making them more productive, resilient and healthy for animals, people and the environment. CEIGRAM has been involved in two components of this project: aflatoxin management in animal feed<\/strong> and the development of index-based drought insurance for pastures<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n

This seminar will address the topic of index-linked insurance. The seminar will focus on two academic papers. The first describes a methodology for reducing the base risk and improving the quality of index-linked insurance. This methodology has already been implemented in Kenya\u2019s advanced index-linked insurance system. The second part of the seminar will deal with the index-linked insurance model developed for West Africa, emphasising the advantages of implementing it through a regional approach. <\/p>\n\n

Eva Iglesias<\/a><\/strong> is a professor in the Department of Agricultural Economics, Statistics and Business Management at ETSIAAB. She has advised and managed projects for the World Bank, the European Commission, the European Parliament and several governments in Europe and Latin America. Her areas of expertise focus on agricultural policy and environmental economics, with a particular emphasis on water management, risk analysis and index-based agricultural insurance. She has served as principal investigator for the PRISMA project at the UPM. <\/p>\n\n

Enrique Estefan\u00eda<\/a><\/strong> holds a PhD in Agricultural Engineering; his doctoral research focused on climate finance and index-based insurance for drought risk in sub-Saharan Africa<\/a>. His research interests span development economics, agricultural economics and climate finance, with a particular focus on the design of financial tools for climate risk management. During his PhD, he undertook research placements at the University of California, Davis, and the University of Maryland. <\/p>\n\n
