A new Research Seminar will take place this thursday, June 20th, in CEIGRAM. The Seminar will take place in an online and in person format, in CEIGRAM’s Conference Room. At 12.30.
Esther Hernández-Montes, CEIGRAM’s Secretary and teacher in the Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería Agronómica, Alimentaria y de Biosistemas (ETSIAAB), will present us a Project signed with the Maltese Ministry of Agriculture, about the agroclimatic risk assessment and the development of an insurance scheme in the industrial tomato cultivation in the country.
Tomato cultivation in Malta is one of great importance in economic and cultural terms. Thanks to the favourable and moderate temperatures and pluviometry, this crop is produced in the country during the whole year: in summer in open fields and in winter in greenhouses. Most of the tomato farmers in the country have drip irrigation because of the efficiency in water use of this technique.
In the context of climate change which affects with a special intensity the mediterranean countries, the tomato crop will need to adapt and take into consideration the agroclimatic risks which can affect it. This seminar will expose the agroclimatic risks that could affect this crop, and the particularities of the research made for the Maltese Ministry of Agriculture, as well as the adaptation strategies suggested to build resilience in this crop minimizing damage and favouring climatic adaptation.
