Agroenergy Group (GA-UPM)

The Agroenergetics Group brings together around 20 people, including researchers, technical staff, administrative staff and research trainees, mainly dedicated to R&D&I in agroenergy, phytodepuration and microalgae. Most of its members are associated with the Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería Agronómica, Alimentaria y Biosistemas, where the Group’s facilities are located, and some others with the Escuela de Ingenieros Industriales. The Group is multidisciplinary, and includes the profiles of agricultural engineering, environmental sciences, chemistry, physics, pharmacy, biological sciences and forestry engineering. The Group specialises in R&D&I in the field of agro-energy, which includes, among other lines of work, biomass production, its characterisation, energy crops, transformation of biomass into solid and liquid biofuels, energy conversion and prospective studies and evaluation of potential. In parallel, it has three other important lines of research in the field of phyto-purification, i.e. the use of plant species for wastewater purification, the production of microalgae for different applications, including bioenergy and wastewater purification, and the life cycle analysis of energy systems. Other lines in which the Group is working are non-conventional applications of plant species and, generically, plant production.
